The monthly summer Oak Bay Village Night Market is such a great event in this upscale British enclave of Victoria, I’m surprised how little publicity it gets. I searched a half dozen Oak Bay related websites, including a community calendar, the official Oak Bay Tourism site, and others, and couldn’t find a thing about it.
Unlike most of Victoria’s weekly summer markets, the Oak Bay Village Night Market is restricted to the third Wednesday of each month from June through September. But if anything, the community really pulls out the stops to make their monthly market that much more fun and flavourful.
From 4 pm to 8 pm on the designated Wednesday, Oak Bay Avenue is closed to traffic between Hampshire Road and Monterey Avenue. Local entertainers and vendors then fill the street with live swing music, traditional Morris Dancers, arts, crafts, local fruit and garden produce, miniature cupcakes, cotton candy, and the aromas of grilled salmon, made-to-order tacos, and fire-roasted pizza.
Rather than woo you to the event with more words, let me show you some photographs I took at the Oak Bay market in August. These should seal the deal.
Many of Victoria’s summer markets end as of the Labour Day weekend, but others carry on into the fall months. See a full list of markets and their schedules here.
