Groupon Delivers 50-90% off Vancouver Restaurants, Shows, and Other Fun Activities

SCRIMP>>When I first heard about Groupon, I thought it might be the catch of the day. And in a way, it is—though it’s not a fish.

“Groupon” is short for “group coupon.” If you sign up with the Vancouver branch of Groupon, you get one very enticing coupon delivered to you by e-mail each day. (Sorry friends; there is no Victoria outlet yet.)

Wait now! Before you say “BLECH, I hate using coupons,” let me tell you: these are no ordinary coupons for, say, 50 cents off Highliner fish sticks. These are major discounts—at least 50% and up to 90% off—on desirable Vancouver products and services. Here are the deals Groupon has offered me since I signed up to receive their messages earlier this week.

• $35 for a one-year membership with Vancouver Zipcar car-sharing service, including a $50 driving credit. That’s 73% off the regular value of $130.
• $8 for a coupon worth $18 in food and drinks at Vancouver’s Wallflower Modern Diner.
• $10 for two tickets to “The Universe in a Night” planetarium program on Saturday nights at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre (a $22.56 value, including taxes).
• $60 for four fitness workout classes at Tantra Fitness, normally worth $120.

There is only one catch to the daily deal: enough people must opt in to buy the bargain item for the deal to go through. This encourages buyers to spread the word about the deal to others, and ensures that Groupon can deliver a really huge boost in business to its clients in exchange for the deep, deep discounts.
