SCRIMP>>What good are those plastic “cash cards” so many businesses are trying to fob on us these days? You know, the kind you “load” with money for future use. Heck, I see the advantage for the business: the customer prepays long before services are rendered. But what’s in it for ME?
Well, finally I have an answer, for Starbucks, anyway. If you buy a Starbucks card—or, like me, receive one from a kindly friend (thanks, Rowena!)—register it online at Starbucks.com for five benefits that really are worthwhile.
- The user name and password you create on the website become your passport to two free hours of WiFi Internet access daily at any Starbucks outlet.
- While you’re hanging out checking your e-mail (or reading Scrimp or Splurge online), you can get FREE refills on brewed coffee or tea. Wow! Just like in the old diner days when a waitress would come around and top up your cup. Thank you, ma’am.
- You can have soy milk or a flavoured syrup—normally costly little extras—added to your drink for free.
- If you buy your coffee beans at Starbucks, they will give you a tall-sized beverage of your choice with purchase.
- The final sweet little deal is the annual free Starbucks beverage on your birthday. No size limit on that one, so go for the venti!
When it comes to these freebies, just what is the MOST expensive Starbucks beverage you could order? Blogger Billy Chasen decided to find out. Click here to read his funny anecdote. Warning: 13 shots of espresso could be hazardous to your health.

Hey Anita! Thanks for the great tip! Wish I had known last week when I bought a pound of beans for my french press coffee pot – which I brought in to work as now we have no more free coffee …. The refills are a good reason to add another plastic card to my wallet. Look forward to your next tip. I especially appreciate the ones that are province wide! Hugs
Margaret
Holy kwap, I had no idea the card came with so many perks! You are such a sleuth! (Uh, can I have my card back? – joking!)
Thanks so much for your note, Margaret.
I know, I’ll be carrying my Starbucks card faithfully from now on, even if my wallet is bulging with other plastic! I was quite astonished to find the card entitles the user to free refills.
Thanks for following Scrimp or Splurge! I love sharing my finds with friends.
I’ll get you a Starbucks card of your very own, Rowena-bean.
Thanks again for the gift, and for helping me discover the perks of registration.
